Meet the Sheriff
MARK GULLEDGE IN HIS OWN WORDS
In 1995, at the age of 17, I began my public service career as a junior fireman with the Hamlet Fire Department. I pursued my EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification while still in high school and began working full-time as a Fire Fighter/EMT with the Hamlet Fire Department in 1998. While employed by the Hamlet Fire Department, I was recognized as “Fireman of the Year” in 1996 and 1997. Although I had a passion for providing services to the community through the fire department, my ultimate dream was to become a Deputy Sheriff.
In June of 1999, that dream came true when I was hired as a detention officer with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. In June of 2000, I was promoted to a Deputy Sheriff in the patrol division. In 2005, I was promoted to Patrol Sergeant and again in the same year to Lieutenant, where I served as a night shift supervisor.
Throughout my law enforcement career, I have held various positions within the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office. Before being named Sheriff, I served as the Chief Deputy for ten years, during which I managed the day-to-day operations and budget for the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and Detention Center, until the untimely death of Sheriff James E. Clemmons Jr.
In August of 2021, I was was appointed Sheriff of Richmond County. I ran for Sheriff in 2022 and the people spoke and it has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Richmond County the last four years. With your support and vote, I can continue being a servant of the people of Richmond County and lead the Sheriff’s Office in the most honorable, honest, and professional manner.
During my public safety career of 30 years, I have proudly served all the citizens of Richmond County, with high integrity, loyalty, and dedication. I have received the following certifications and training during my law enforcement career:
